If you're coming from a Western culture then landing in India is like walking into a war-zone. Noises are louder, colours are brighter, smells are smellier. Far, far smellier. The sense of personal space for most Indian people is about a quarter to an eighth that of most westerners, and staring is not considered even the slightest bit rude. In any other country in the world you are the tourist, observing the locals; in India you are the observed, and closely.
You will be almost instantly besieged by people trying to sell you tourist tat, tours, taxi rides or just about anything else you might never want. Ignore them. Of course, some are just out to scam you, and they'll normally start by asking why you "don't like to talk to Indian people". Be warned: anybody who tries to talk to you as you walk down the street is either trying to rip you off or sell you something. Guaranteed. Think about it: would you go up to some foreign tourists in your local town and just start chatting to them, then invite them back to your place for some tea? It's a scam, and you should just shake your head and walk on. If someone's begging then it's up to you if you want to give them anything, but I'd personally recommend saving up your money and donating it to a genuine charity instead. The money will be better used, and it takes the decision-making process out of any beggar-related encounters. |
